Is there a way to retrieve the device orientation?
I don't think so - best current approach would be to design flow layouts that handle different sizes and orientations automatically.
I think we still have quite a bit to learn in this area using the current set of features - for example the shipped RPG SEARCHSEL templates have just been improved to better handle narrow devices,
